Comprehensive Standard:		3.4.5
		The institution publishes academic policies that adhere to principles of good educational practice. These are disseminated to students, faculty, and other interested parties through publications that accurately represent the programs and services of the institution.

Statement of Compliance: The University of Texas-Pan American publishes academic policies that adhere to principles of good educational practice. These are disseminated to students, faculty, and other interested parties through publications that accurately represent the programs and services of the institution.

Narrative: The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) adheres to the principles of good educational practices including encouraging a) faculty and student interaction, b) communication, c) active learning, and d) respect for diverse talents and learning delivering processes. As a result of UTPA’s adherence to these principles, all academic policies are a) established and monitored by the Curriculum Committee, b) function in accordance with the regulations of the state agencies to which the University is subject, c) consistent with the various accrediting agencies which oversee our academic programs, and d) “…disseminated to students, faculty, and other interested parties through publications and accurately represent the programs and services of the institution,” such as the undergraduate catalog and graduate catalog.

The following are a few examples of the academic policies listed in the catalog as well as other publications issued to the students:

It is possible for undergraduate students to enroll in graduate courses in their last semester.
All students need to officially apply to the University prior to registering for academic courses.
All undergraduate students must take the Texas Higher Education Assessment test or approved alternate test prior to enrolling in college-level courses.
Incomplete grades may be given to students, but the instructor of record must submit grade within one regular semester from the date received, unless an extension is requested by the student’s instructor.
Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in order to graduate. Graduate Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to graduate.
When undergraduate courses are repeated, only the last grade and hours attempted are used to calculate the grade point average. Repeated courses will be used in determining the Graduate Admission GPA. Graduate GPAs are a cumulative calculation.
If a student chooses not to attend a class, the student is responsible for officially dropping or withdrawing.
Academic Probation and Suspension will be determined each regular semester on the basis of the student’s current semester and cumulative grade point average:
- Freshman – student’s cumulative grade point average is below 1.70;
- Sophomore – student’s cumulative grade point average is below 1.80;
- Junior/Senior – Student’s cumulative grade point average is below 2.0; and
- Graduate – Student’s cumulative grade point average is below 3.0.
Students on academic suspension may enroll for summer sessions for the purpose of raising their cumulative GPA to the level required for good standing for the student’s classification.
Tuition and Fee Setting Process is in effect.
UTPA Excellence and Departmental Scholarships are awarded to students who have completed a UT-Pan American Scholarship Application by the proper deadline.

These publications include The University of Texas-Pan American 2005-2007 Undergraduate Catalog; The University of Texas-Pan American 2005-2007 Graduate Catalog; the Handbook of Operating Procedures; the Faculty Senate website; the Staff Senate website; The University of Texas-Pan American Student Guide; the Graduate School website; the Undergraduate Degrees website; UTPA Fact Book website; The University of Texas-Pan American Home Page website, which publicizes campus events, news releases and announcements and calendar of events; the UTPA Campus Report and its website; The Pan American and its website; The Panorama and its website; and the fall, spring and summer Class Schedules and website.
